Woodburning was not immediately an art form that you could learn anywhere at the end of the last century. This was certainly not the case for Ivan Govaerts.
As an upholstery worker, his interest in woodworking and sculpting quickly emerged in the year 2000. Without any training, he began making wooden boxes and utilitarian objects. To be able to sign these objects, he came up with the idea of buying a woodburning tool to burn his name into the things he made. However, it did not go that far. The device was soon used to transfer simple pencil drawings onto wooden scraps. At a fair, Ivan saw the work of François Peeters, who had already been practising this art form for 30 years. Here he saw that there were many more possibilities with the device. After some self-study and observing, works with more shading came to light. It was now the challenge to further hone his skills in pyrography, where creating solid pencil drawings as a foundation was essential. Ivan has no doubt that a drawing course would benefit his technique but is currently sticking to self-study. In 2006, it was time to turn his life in a different professional direction. Ivan is now also a firefighter. Due to irregular working hours, it became possible to showcase his works more through exhibitions. He always enjoys surprising the audience and making them appreciate his burning work. The style that Ivan uses is difficult to categorise. Anything that is even slightly realistic he takes as a challenge to translate into a engraving.
The love for woodturning came much later. He took a course with Didiër Sirjacobs. In the meantime, the sole proprietorship Woodcreator was started, and under this name, these two crafts are combined with the first love, wood carving.
